Job description

SITE ENVIRONMENTAL SPECIALIST

Essential functions\duties:

  • Adhere to and enforce OWNER policies, procedures and project documents, including the Stop Work Authority and the Structured Feedback.
  • Ensure that relevant licenses, permits, and approvals as applicable, are communicated to the Contractor site staff before the commencement of site establishment and construction on site
  • Provide or ensure proper implementation of environmental training for all project personnel per site training and orientation requirements
  • Conduct or participate in regular meetings with owner (or the Site Manager / HSE Responsible / Project Manager appointed by the Owner) and Contractors to communicate and track activities as they relate to environmental compliance
  • Support the Site Manager in the collection and reporting of sustainability and environmental data using applicable reporting programs and tools.
  • Ensure environmental and compliance matrix for construction are updated.
  • Evaluate the construction contractor's implementation of environmental mitigation measures and Best Management Practices (BMPs) required in the contract, project plans and other authorizing documents
  • Provide guidance and ensure communication and documentation on implementation of prudent modifications to BMPs and environmental mitigation measures where required
  • Ensure contractor's Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) inspections, or equivalent, as well as all of the applicable documentation and amendments are completed in accordance with project requirements
  • Ensure compliance through regular and comprehensive inspection of the site and surrounding areas, and that any non-compliance or remedial measures that need to be applied are reported
  • Provide guidance during construction when working near or within the boundaries of wetlands, streams, and other environmentally/culturally sensitive areas and habitats.
  • Support decision making process for assessment of construction-related variance requests.
  • Implement, monitor and verify to ensure that environmental impacts are kept to a minimum as far as possible and supporting the Site Manager to guarantee the housekeeping of the site.
  • Gather and verify from Contractors the environmental KPIs related to the construction activities and sending to the HSE Responsible.
  • Notify immediately and report all the environmental incidents and/or damages and near misses of the site following all Client procedures.
  • Support the Owner (or the Site Manager / HSE Responsible / Project Manager appointed by the Owner) to prepare on time all the notifications to be sent to the third parties (Authorities, principal contractor, contractors, etc.) prior/during/and after the commencement of the construction
  • Support the Owner (or the Site Manager / Project Manager appointed by the Owner) during any meeting and inspections performed by the competent Authorities or delegated compliance monitors, attending during these meetings and inspections on site
  • Support, mentor and coach as needed the construction project employees by having the ability to demonstrate how to perform the work in a manner in which the environmental impact is minimized.
  • Support implementation of innovation and digitization initiatives that increase efficiency, sustainability and safety in construction activities, staying current with emerging technologies.
  • Test, pilot, implement and provide feedback on OWNER initiatives.

Main Accountability

  • Managing compliance of Contractors in regard to environmental requirements
  • Supervising the construction activities, ensuring environmental requirements are met
  • Hazard identification
  • Ensuring proper reporting of all environmental incidents and non-compliance
  • Support to the site construction team concerning environmental training
  • Gather and report all information relating to environmental KPIs related to construction activities

Requirements:

  • BA/BS Degree in Environmental Science, Biological Resources
  • 3-7 years of experience in Environmental compliance for construction projects
  • Experience on wind or solar construction project a plus
  • A working knowledge of environmental aspects of a renewable energy construction project, including but not limited to, civil construction, wetland and stream crossings, agricultural lands, drain tile, cultural resources, bird and bat conservation strategies, and erosion and sediment control design and implementation.
  • Environmental requirements, including state-specific licenses or certifications, in the states of the projects
  • Environmental terminology
  • Environmental media (e.g. air, water, land, fauna, flora)
  • Techniques for determining risk (e.g. environmental aspects/impacts evaluation, including methods for evaluating significance)
  • Source reduction, waste minimization, reuse, recycling and treatment practices and process (waste, wastewaters, excavated soils)
  • Working knowledge of environmental aspects of a renewable energy construction project Environmental performance evaluation, environmental reporting and disclosure
  • Knowledge of Health, Safety and Quality control practices at Construction Projects
  • Audit techniques
  • Ability to pull information from spreadsheets, analyse data from various sources, audit and prepare written reports
  • Advanced time management and organizational skills with ability to work cross functionally.
  • Excellent communications skills and ability to work in an international, multicultural team, with contractors and all other parties involved in the construction phase.
  • Ability to work independently and be self-motivated, with minimal supervision in challenging, fast-paced projects.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word and Power Point) and ability to learn and use safety software and applications.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in inclement weather.
  • Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally up to 100% of time, including temporary assignment to projects and relocation between projects with short notice.
  • Ability to utilize tablet and smartphone for daily work activities and creation of reports in company software and ability to apply technology innovations into daily construction activities.
  • Current drivers' license required.
  • Preference for candidates that have proven environmental compliance or permitting experience in the state where project is being constructed.
